Plant Rehabilitation Project: Activated Sludge / BNR

In the case referenced here, the initial data was supplied in September for Solution Design purposes. The objective was the rehabilitation of a wastewater treatment works that was approximately 50% overloaded both hydraulically and organically.

The Solution began with replacing the existing aeration system with SIS.bio’s proprietary HEADs system which delivered a saving in electricity consumption of over 60%.

Commissioning of the solution began the following January and the improvements achieved by May are detailed.

Samples were taken from the outflow of the clarifier into which the outflow from the activated sludge tank flowed. As can be seen from the photo and the initial data, the situation beforehand was dire.

COD & TSS

COD and TSS were orders of magnitude over the permitted limits for discharged treated effluent. Both were comfortably compliant by May.

Nitrate

Nitrate was more than double the permitted levels for discharged treated effluent and was brought comfortably into compliance.

Phosphate

Phosphate levels were compliant before the delivery of the solution but improvements were still achieved.

E. Coli

By operating the activated sludge plant in accordance with SIS.bio’ recommended methodology and parameters E. Coli levels were brought comfortably into compliance.
